Choosing a career is one of the major decisions that every child is asked to take after completion of class 12th.The Indian education system offers a wide number of subjects at secondary levels. However, in the crucial years of study, students have to select between broad based subjects leaving them with very few choices to realise their line of interest. Hence, when it comes to choosing a career at the end of the high school results, it is not always possible for the child to take a decision on his own. The inputs from parents, teachers, guides, friends and peer groups play a major role in their choice of career. With so many inputs the decision making process only gets tougher and more difficult than the board exams. The end result is that not every child may be lucky enough to have chosen a career according to his/her passion or liking, leading to frustration, unhappiness and lack of productive self.
No career is a bad choice, but how one manages it through his lifetime is what matters. A major motivating factor for success is being happy in a profession and it is possible only if the choice is based on his/her own passion. Choosing a line of education in alignment with his/her aptitude, interest and potential in the crucial years of study helps a student to be more productive.
Career counselling is an important field in the education system that can help students think clear on the subjects that interest them, help them to narrow down to the topics that are closer to heart and which can keep them motivated.
